Is the Squier Hot Rails Stratocaster any good?
Hi,
Basically, I’m thinking of buying this Squier by Fender, which has 22 frets, Duncan Designed™ HR-101 pickups (a single-coil-size version of high-output Seymour Duncan Hot Rails humbucking pickups), and is only £199.
I’m really tempted to buy this guitar, so is it any good?
If you have it, please can you tell me whether it is any good to play Iron Maiden, Metallica and Megadeth sorta tunes and whether it is at a good price!
(If you think it is awful please could you say what guitar i should look at instead)

Hi. I think it really depends on the style you want to play, as well as how much you are willing to modify/upgrade it.
I think it’s probably an ok guitar for the price, but as usual with cheaper guitars, you should be prepared to either do your own setup or have a setup done. Being a metal musician myself, I would imagine that the Squier would probably have a warmer tone and not sound as good for fast palm-muted, metal riffs, but it probably sounds sweet with leads. For the type of music you’re describing, usually hot humbuckers are the best bet to get that type of sound.
There are humbuckers that are available to fit into the single coil slots, so it all comes around to how much you want to modify the guitar.
If you want to play metal, I would not suggest buying it unless you plan on modifying it in some way (changing pickups, etc). Overall, it’s probably a good guitar for the price, but it all comes down to whether or not you like the sound. I personally love Ibanez and think most of those stock sound great for metal. You may want to look at one that has a humbucker as well as a single coil pickup.
